SAPS Recruitment 2026/2027: Apply for Police Trainee Posts

The South African Police Service is recruiting. 5,500 entry-level police trainees will join the 2026/2027 intake under reference TRA26/27, and applications opened on 21 October 2026. If you want to wear the uniform, this is the guide: who can apply, how to apply, what documents you need, what the selection process looks like, and the closing date you can't afford to miss — 13 November 2026.

You apply online only, through the official SAPS e-recruitment portal at erecruitment.saps.gov.za. One application per person. It costs nothing — if anyone asks you for money, that's a scam.

SAPS police trainee requirements: who can apply

The SAPS careers page lists the basic requirements for police trainee posts. You must be a South African citizen, between 18 and 35 years old, and hold a Grade 12 certificate or an equivalent qualification. You need to be proficient in English and at least one other official language. You must have no criminal convictions and no pending criminal cases. And you must be medically, physically and mentally fit for police work.

You also need to be willing to serve anywhere in South Africa. SAPS decides where you're posted after training — not you. If that doesn't sit well with you, think hard before you apply.

There is a full breakdown of each requirement — what "fit" means in practice, how your Grade 12 results are checked, and the language rule explained — in our SAPS police trainee requirements guide.

How to apply: the SAPS application form 2026

There is no paper form and no downloadable PDF. The SAPS application form for 2026 is the online application on the e-recruitment portal. Here's the process:

  1. Go to erecruitment.saps.gov.za — the official SAPS e-recruitment portal.
  2. Register an account (the SAPS e-recruitment login is your email and the password you set). Keep these safe — you'll need them to check your status.
  3. Find the Police Trainee post for the 2026/2027 intake (reference TRA26/27) and click apply.
  4. Fill in the online application form completely. Double-check your ID number, contact details and Grade 12 information — mistakes here get applications rejected.
  5. Upload the supporting documents the portal asks for.
  6. Submit before 13 November 2026. Late applications are not accepted.
  7. Submit only ONE application. Multiple applications can disqualify you.

Our step-by-step SAPS application form 2026 walkthrough covers the login, the form fields, common errors, and what to do if the portal is slow on busy days.

Documents you'll need

Have these ready before you start: your ID (South African ID document or card), your Grade 12 certificate or equivalent qualification proof, and proof that you meet the language requirements. The portal will tell you exactly which documents to upload. Scan or photograph them clearly — blurry uploads cause problems.

The selection process

SAPS runs a multi-stage selection process for police trainees. Expect documentation checks, fitness and medical assessments, and background screening (your criminal record status is verified). Only candidates who pass each stage move forward. The process takes months, and SAPS will contact you through the details on your application — another reason to type them correctly.

Training, stipend and appointment

Training takes place at SAPS academies. During training you receive a monthly stipend of R5,000. Trainees who complete the programme successfully may be appointed as Constables in the South African Police Service. That's the entry rank — the real career starts after the academy.

Warning: SAPS recruitment scams

Applying for SAPS careers posts is FREE. The SAPS has repeatedly warned that scammers demand "application fees" or "processing fees" from hopefuls, especially around intakes like this one. SAPS never asks for payment at any stage. Any site selling a "guaranteed" spot, any "agent" who charges you, any "SAPS application form 2026 download" that asks for your card details — all fraud. We keep a running guide to the latest tricks in our SAPS recruitment scams page.

Quick question - I turn 36 in February next year. Am I still okay for this intake or should I not bother? The age thing is stressing me.

I lost my matric certificate years ago and only have a copy. Will they accept that or do I need to get a replacement from the department first?

For the language requirement, I speak English and isiZulu fluently. That should be fine right? Just want to be sure before I apply.

Is the portal working for anyone else? I tried registering last night and it kept timing out. Maybe too many people on it at once.

R5000 stipend is honestly low but I am applying anyway. Does anyone know which academies they use? Hoping I dont get posted too far from home lol.
