SAPS Police Trainee Requirements: Who Can Apply
SAPS Police Trainee Requirements: Who Can Apply
Thinking of applying for the SAPS 2026/2027 police trainee intake? Before you touch the application form, make sure you meet the requirements. SAPS is strict about these — if you don't qualify, your application goes nowhere, and it's better to know that now than after you've spent hours on the portal.
This is the intake for 5,500 entry-level trainees (reference TRA26/27), applications open 21 October to 13 November 2026. Here's what SAPS asks of every applicant.
The basic requirements
South African citizen
You must be a citizen of South Africa. Have your ID document or ID card ready — it's the first thing the portal asks for, and your citizenship is verified against it.
Aged 18 to 35
You must be between 18 and 35 years old. This is one of the requirements people ask about most. The advert wording is what counts: check whether the age is measured at application, at appointment, or at the start of training. If you're close to the upper limit, read the TRA26/27 advert itself carefully rather than guessing.
Grade 12 or equivalent
You need a Grade 12 certificate (matric) or an equivalent qualification. Enter your results exactly as they appear on your certificate — the application form walkthrough explains why small mismatches here cause problems. SAPS verifies qualifications, so don't round anything up.
English plus another official language
You must be proficient in English and at least one other official language of South Africa. List languages you can actually work in — police work is communication, and language ability can be assessed during selection. Claiming a language you can't speak will come back to bite you.
No criminal record
You must have no criminal convictions and no pending criminal cases. SAPS runs background checks — this is non-negotiable for a police service. If you have a record, you're out for this intake.
Medically, physically and mentally fit
Police work is demanding, and SAPS assesses fitness through medical examinations and physical assessments during the selection process. "Fit" here means fit for duty: you need to pass the medical and cope with the physical training at the academy. If you have a medical condition, the SAPS medical assessment is the final word — not your own opinion, and not ours.
Willing to serve anywhere in South Africa
This one catches people off guard. You must be willing to be posted anywhere in the country. After training at a SAPS academy, your station could be in any province. If you're only willing to work in your hometown, don't apply — SAPS decides, not you.
What SAPS is really looking for
The checklist gets you through the door; the selection process tests the rest. SAPS screens for integrity, discipline, and the temperament for police work. The background check, the interviews, and the assessments all point at the same question: can this person be trusted with a uniform and a firearm? Take the process seriously from day one.
It helps to think about it from SAPS's side. They're hiring 5,500 people they'll train for months at their own expense — the R5,000 monthly stipend alone is a serious investment. They're looking for candidates who'll complete training and stay in the service, not people who'll wash out at the first hard week at the academy. Showing up prepared, on time, and honest at every stage is the simplest way to stand out.
What disqualifies you
Criminal convictions or pending cases. Failing the medical or fitness assessments. Qualifications that don't verify. Multiple applications for the same intake. And lying anywhere on the form — SAPS verifies, and getting caught means you're done, possibly permanently.
What happens if you qualify
Meet the requirements and submit a clean application before 13 November 2026, and you enter the selection process: document checks, assessments, medicals, background screening. Successful candidates train at SAPS academies on a R5,000 monthly stipend, and those who complete training may be appointed as Constables. The full journey from form to uniform is covered in our step-by-step application guide.
A note on scams
Meeting the requirements doesn't cost money, and no agent can "guarantee" your selection. Anyone who says otherwise is lying to you — see our SAPS recruitment scams guide for the tricks doing the rounds this intake.
