SAPS Application Form 2026: Step-by-Step
SAPS Application Form 2026: Step-by-Step
The SAPS application form for 2026 isn't a paper form and it isn't a PDF you download. It's an online form on the official SAPS e-recruitment portal, erecruitment.saps.gov.za. This walkthrough covers the whole thing: creating your account, the SAPS e-recruitment login, filling in the form, uploading documents, and submitting before the closing date of 13 November 2026.
The intake you're applying for is the 2026/2027 police trainee intake — 5,500 posts, reference TRA26/27, applications opened 21 October 2026. One application per person, and it's free.
Step 1: Get your documents ready first
Don't start the form until you've got everything at hand. You'll need your South African ID, your Grade 12 certificate or equivalent, and any other documents the portal lists. Photograph or scan them clearly — you'll upload them later, and a blurry upload can hold up your application. Before you go further, make sure you actually qualify: the full list is in our SAPS police trainee requirements guide.
Step 2: Register on the e-recruitment portal
Go to erecruitment.saps.gov.za. If you've never used the SAPS e-recruitment login, you'll need to register an account first — usually with your email address and a password you choose. Write them down somewhere safe. You'll log back in with these details to check your application status later, and a forgotten password during recruitment season is a headache you don't need.
Step 3: Find the trainee post
Once you're logged in, look for the Police Trainee advert for the 2026/2027 intake. Check the reference number: TRA26/27. SAPS adverts carry reference numbers, and applying under the right reference matters — it's how your application gets routed to the right intake.
Step 4: Fill in the application form
Work through the form slowly. The fields that cause the most rejections are the boring ones: ID number, names (exactly as on your ID), contact details, and education history. Type your phone number and email address twice in your head before moving on — if SAPS can't reach you, you won't hear about the next stage. Enter your Grade 12 details exactly as they appear on your certificate.
The form will also ask about languages. You need English plus at least one other official language, so list the languages you're genuinely proficient in — this can be tested later.
Step 5: Upload your documents
Upload each document where the portal asks for it. Check that every file is readable before you submit. If the portal gives you size limits, compress your files rather than skipping the upload. Missing documents are one of the simplest reasons applications get set aside.
Step 6: Review and submit — once
Read the whole form back before you hit submit. Then submit exactly one application. Multiple applications for the same intake can disqualify you, so don't "try again" with a second account if you're unsure the first one went through — check your status on the portal first.
Step 7: Track your status
After submitting, you can check your application status by logging in at erecruitment.saps.gov.za. SAPS will contact successful candidates using the details on the form. The selection process takes months — fitness and medical assessments, document verification, background checks. Patience is part of the process. One tip: save or screenshot your application reference number if the portal gives you one. If you ever need to query something, that number is how anyone official will find your file.
Also, keep the email account you registered with active and check it regularly, including the spam folder. SAPS correspondence about assessments or document requests can land anywhere, and a missed email can mean a missed opportunity. If you change your phone number after applying, update it on the portal immediately.
Common problems (and fixes)
The portal is slow or won't load
Traffic spikes near the deadline. Apply early — don't leave it to 12 November. If the site is down, wait and try again rather than paying some "agent" who promises to submit for you. Nobody can submit on your behalf through a different channel; the portal is the only route.
I forgot my login details
Use the portal's password recovery. If you registered with an email you no longer use, that's a real problem — which is why step 2 says to register with an email you actually check.
Someone is selling the "official" form
There is no official downloadable SAPS application form for 2026. Anyone selling you a form, or charging an "application fee," is running a scam. Read our guide to SAPS recruitment scams before you hand over a cent.
After the closing date
Once applications close on 13 November 2026, SAPS starts the long selection process. Keep your phone on and check your email — including the spam folder. And if you miss this intake, read our guide to the SAPS application form 2027 opening date so you're ready for the next round.
